Tad
Tad is an interesting and fairly unique story. Tad is a [tad]pole. Tad and her fellow tad brothers and sisters go through the stages of tadpoles to frogs. The story is not simply a description of Tad’s day, it includes Tad’s thoughts and is written well, and it was fun to see the reaction of my little one when my little one realized Tad is a tadpole, which is a baby frog. Plus, the illustrations have their own unique style, which we all enjoyed.
However, the book creates a sense of suspense and fear within the story. The antagonist Big Blub is both described and illustrated to be scary. My little one actually said Big Blub was very scary and wanted to skip past him. Because our goal has been while our little one’s brain is developing in the critical first five years to avoid feeling fear as much as possible, if I had been thinking and read it before reading it with my little one, we’d have skipped it. We didn’t read this one repeatedly.
With that warning, I acknowledge other families may not be nearly as sensitive to the feelings of fear and suspense as we are and if you are not that sensitive, the book should be a great read and could even be educational if you talk through the uniqueness of how frogs develop.
Cautions: The story creates feelings of fear and suspense when reading it and the antagonist, Big Blub, will probably be decently scary to little ones.
