I Got a Chicken for My Birthday
Who gets a chicken for their birthday? It’s a question that came up for my little one with this story. We had a good giggle at it.
The book is a cute story focused on the chicken that doesn’t act like a chicken, with a funny little twist at the end (it’s not a big unexpected twist, it’s just clever and funny). There’s not much to critique; the story is written well. The illustrations aren’t a style that we prefer, but we don’t dislike them and plenty of people will enjoy them more than us. And this is a little thing, but we kind of like that the little girl calls her grandmother abuela. It let us talk to our little native English speaker about other cultures and languages and how some people use different words for the exact same things.
Cautions: At one point the chicken “steals” the girl’s cat and dog so when we read that page we just used a different word since our little one is already aware of what stealing means.
