Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site
This is a fantastic book, especially for bedtime.
I’ve said it in several places, but it is really hard to write a book in rhyme and keep the story cohesive and flowing well. But this story is just that - written in rhyme, cohesive, flows well and keeps interest all the way through. It’s well written.
I was torn over this but finally decided on this category. The only reason it didn’t land in the favorites category is the subject matter. Instead of little cuddly animals or sweet little ones, the characters are construction equipment. My little one loves trucks and cars but didn’t really relate well to these characters and I assume that is a bigger problem, that not all little ones will automatically or easily relate to construction equipment as main characters.
But the counter argument is the illustrations themselves and my little one’s reaction to them. Both the writing and the illustrations are fantastic, and the drawings give the machines character and personality, giving as much of an opportunity as possible for a little one to relate to a type of character they may not automatically relate to. On our first read, my little one commented, “look! it looks like this one has a cutey little face!”
