Curious George Learns the Alphabet

This story is not the typical Curious George book. It’s not a story. Its intention is to teach the alphabet. Because it didn’t come across to me one way or the other as a favorite or a book to avoid, my wife and I had a discussion about it. She loved it, I didn’t like it. My little one seemed indifferent.

My wife thought the drawings were clever. Since it is a book about the alphabet, each letter gets a little discussion and picture and the pictures draw the letter into the subject of the entry (like a big open mouth on an alligator in the shape of an A). I thought the pictures were a bit forced, but my little one did like them. My little one seemed entertained by the different little descriptions for each of the letters, but there was one entry I didn’t like, about tomahawks and Indians.

Overall, it’s not a bad read, and for some little ones it may be a great fit for teaching letters. Again, my little one did like it. However, it didn’t hold my little one’s attention, and it is a long book, so even though she does love Curious George, we use other books to teach the alphabet.

Cautions: I was only slightly concerned about the one entry, otherwise there’s educational positives to the book with nothing to really be concerned about.
